Camp for kids with Arthritis

What is Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) is the most common forms of arthritis in children.  It is also called juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA).  In some children it may be a mild condition with few problems or in others it may be more prevalent and cause joint and tissue damage

The most common characteristics of JRA are: joint inflammation, joint damage and/or change in growth, and joint stiffness. Most commonly children have symptoms such as stiffness following rest, often in the morning, and tenderness or weakness in muscles and other soft tissues. The degrees of JRA can affect children in multiple different ways and they may not all have the same symptoms.

How do you accommodate our children?

Campers with JRA are incorporated into camp alongside other campers. The staff are well versed in the issues associated with JRA and are willing to help out in any way. Our health care staff is on hand 24 hours a day to help out with any issues that may arise, help with administration of medications and encourage a healthy lifestyle.

What is different about Camp Diamond?

Camp Diamond offers a distinct experience of camp without the pressure. JRA campers are thoroughly involved in programs but also have the opportunity to rest when needed. Though there is a schedule we will make accommodations when necessary. In addition, Suzanne (aka Buttons), has Rheumatoid Arthritis and understands its limitations but also knows that when you feel good you want to be part of it all. Because she has first hand experience, she can provide your camper with the utmost in care & adventure.

I am still nervous about sending my camper away by him/herself for the first time. Are there any programs for the family?

Yes. Camp Diamond offers Family Camp which is another option. This allows the entire family to participate and your camper to see what Camp Diamond has to offer. Check it out.

If you have questions call Suzanne at 647-286-3816 - she'd be happy to speak to you.
