Our Background
Mission: Camp Diamond provides youth with the
opportunity to experience the outdoors and create a sense of
self-confidence and
awareness so that they are better equipped to achieve their best.
During our family camp programs, we strive to provide families
with time to bond, create memories and learn new
skills. Throughout our girls'
programs, we aim to encourage girls to try things they have never done before,
learn
how to problem-solve, and to develop a keen sense of independence.
The five main principles of Camp Diamond
include strength, joy, enrichment and diversity. We want our campers
to have strength in their own choices, joy in
partaking and participating in a community atmosphere, enrichment
of skills and opportunities, diversity of people, talents and ideas, and building a sustainable environment.
Who is the Camp
Director/Owner?
 |
Suzanne "Buttons" Slater has been in the camping
industry for over 15 years and has experience as a camper, counsellor, senior
staff and director. As a former Camp GayVenture girl , she has
based the philosophy and vision of Camp Diamond on her experiences at the former
all-girls camp. In 2003, she directed and managed the Toronto Area Girl
Guide Camps at Ma-Kee-Wa (Orangeville) and Bonita Glen (Barrie). Not
only has she been involved in camps in Ontario but in the Northeastern United
States as well. Buttons has received her Camp Director
certification from the American Camping Association and holds current teaching certificates in both Ontario and Massachusetts as well
as a Master of Education from Boston College. In the off-season
she works on promoting the camp to prospective campers and families and offers
tutoring support to children in the Toronto area between the ages of 6 and 14. Involved
in the American Camping Association and Ontario Camping Association (OCA)
Standards Committee, she holds the camp and its operations to the strictest
guidelines of both camp organizations. |
